Ambient Lighting

This is the main lighting used in a room. It can be natural with the sun shining in and filling a room, or artificial. Ambient lighting should be soft to the eye and flattering.

Gobos

Gobos are stencils that go over a light to project a certain image. Most couples like to shine their names or their personalized monograms over the dance floor or onto a wall.

Pin Spots

These are narrow beams of light that is directed towards things that you want to highlight or showcase. Usually they are pointed at the centerpieces or the cake, or if the couple has a sweetheart table, pin spots can be directed towards them.

Up-lights

These are lights placed on the ground that shine light upwards. They come in all sorts of colors and can be lit in many different colors that can coordinate with your wedding color scheme.

Washes

This kind of lighting is used to cover a large area. You can do a lighting wash over the dance floor, on the ceilings, on blank walls, or the entire room. There are a ton of different options on what you can do with washes, from colors, to patterns, to images you literally can paint the room with this lighting option.

Moving Lights/Intelligent Lights

In most cases, moving lights also known as intelligent lights are programmable lights that you see at concerts and self-contained theaters. These lights may be a scanner type with moving mirror or be a moving head projecting a variety of colors and some even patterns. Some people confuse moving lights with laser effects because the iris can be narrowed and lights simulate laser effects when in a strobe mode. These are the crème d la crème of lighting for your wedding. Some of the intelligent lights contain gobos, so preferred patterns or logo/monograms gobos can be place in these units as well for maximum effect.
